Olivier Messiaen: Hebrides Ensemble
In March 2007, along with other members of the Hebrides Ensemble, I braved the cold of St Mary’s Church in Haddington and – when the gales stopped blowing – recorded a disc of the complete chamber works of Messiaen, which we released around his 100th birthday the following year. But whatever we lacked by way of creature comforts, we more than made up for in acoustic, and I love the combination of warmth and clarity on this recording. All thanks to the superb Phil Hobbs! And it was a huge privilege to have the opportunity to make the first ever recording of Messiaen’s newly-discovered Fantasie for violin and piano with Alexander Janiczek.
