"Moore and Janiczek combine transcendent intensity with finely judged pacing in Messiaen's Theme and Variations, placing this firmly among the best accounts on disc."

Roll over Beethoven

The backstory for this is that I was playing  with LSO when John Adams was in to conduct El Niño in 2016, and got talking to him about “Hallelujah Junction”, which I love. He mentioned to me that he had arranged one of his String Quartets for two pianos, a piece constructed using fragments from Diabelli Variations and Op 110. It fitted perfectly into a LSO Percussion Ensemble Japanese tour and recording that was being planned, and lo and behold it became a fantastic project, the added bonus being the opportunity of meeting and working with the young star Joe Havlat. Incredible piece – enormously challenging but very much worth the effort, and I believe our recording is the world premiere.

New Richard Rodney Bennett recording

Pianist Andrew West and I had a lot of fun making this disc in Glasgow last year with NYCoS and the supremely energetic Christopher Bell. The piano writing is terrific – very rewarding to play. And nice to hear our hard work appreciated by Jeremy Summerly on Radio Three’s CD Review : “The two pianists here, Philip Moore and Andrew West, do an utterly astonishing job…”

New Chopin recording

In November last year, Naxos released this Chopin disc, featuring his little-known (but very charming) Rondo in C, opus 73, for piano duo, which we recorded at Wyastone in 2010. We rather like the piece!

Olivier Messiaen: Hebrides Ensemble

In March 2007, along with other members of the Hebrides Ensemble, I braved the cold of St Mary’s Church in Haddington and – when the gales stopped blowing – recorded a disc of the complete chamber works of Messiaen, which we released around his 100th birthday the following year. But whatever we lacked by way of creature comforts, we more than made up for in acoustic, and I love the combination of warmth and clarity on this recording. All thanks to the superb Phil Hobbs! And it was a huge privilege to have the opportunity to make the first ever recording of Messiaen’s newly-discovered Fantasie for violin and piano with Alexander Janiczek.

Igor Stravinsky – Piano Duo

This disc features three Stravinsky ballets: Rite of Spring and Petrouchka in Stravinsky’s arrangements, and my own version of the final three movements of Firebird. Transcribing Firebird was a huge project, but very rewarding – it’s now one of our most featured recital pieces.
