I know Petrushka well, having played the orchestral piano part, and from Stravinsky’s four-hand arrangement. This incredibly virtuosic version however, by Victor Babin, specifically for two pianos and fleshed out accordingly, is new to us. Alongside it, Simon and I will play Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, surely one of his greatest scores? Concert at LSO St. Lukes, 17th April 2020
Although I’ve played a lot of Steve’s music, this will be the first “phasing”. Great to have new challenges and really looking forward to attempting to master this technique! Concert at King’s Place, 13th June 2020
The backstory for this is that I was playing with LSO when John Adams was in to conduct El Niño in 2016, and got talking to him about “Hallelujah Junction”, which I love. He mentioned to me that he had arranged one of his String Quartets for two pianos, a piece constructed using fragments from Diabelli Variations and Op 110. It fitted perfectly into a LSO Percussion Ensemble Japanese tour and recording that was being planned, and lo and behold it became a fantastic project, the added bonus being the opportunity of meeting and working with the young star Joe Havlat. Incredible piece – enormously challenging but very much worth the effort, and I believe our recording is the world premiere.
